The stories in Stone Mattress take you through the best aspects of Atwood's early, feminist, often morbid work (the story called "The Freeze-Dried Groom" definitely fits that trend) as well as her more recent skillful observations on ageing (see the stories "Alphinland" and "Burn the Dusties"). As a die-hard Atwood fan I found many familiar themes but explored in new and thought-provoking ways. For someone looking to get into Margaret Atwood this might be a good place to start
