If I could give this book more stars, I would. It’s just incredible. It’s a thriller, yes. And sci-fi which isn’t usually my genre. But really it’s about a common human experience. Did we make the right choices? Do even our minor regrets point us to the fact that had we just made even one choice differently, we would be more fulfilled? What makes me, me? Exploring all of this through the eyes of Jason Dressen, a physics professor at a mid-level college (who gave up his prestigious research career) who is married to Daniella (a woman who gave up what could have been a successful art career). They gave up what could have been all so they could be parents to their unexpected son, Charlie. It’s a good life. They are happy. However, they do wonder what might have been. Just as we all do at some point in our lives. But one night Jason is held up at gun point and what happens after that is one heck of a ride. Does Jason accept his current reality or does he risk it all and fight for the life he had? What makes him, him? And does he want the chance to do it differently? I went through so many emotions. I was angry. So sad for so many characters. Horrified. Happy. There were times I had literal tears. And there were times I just wanted retribution on behalf of these characters. Then I wanted to give some a hug. When I finished this book, all I wanted to do was turn back to page 1 and start all over again. It is a masterpiece.
