So Let Them Burn is a Jamaican-inspired anti-colonial fantasy—with dragons! I loved that Faron was not necessarily a likable FMC, but she was also really badass and unapologetic about who she is, and I did like that about her. Elara, Faron’s sister, is much more likable by the reader, but is set up to ally with enemies of her people. I loved the twist of two sisters placed on opposite sides by fate despite their love for and loyalty to each other. I also loved the character of Reeve, an outsider due to his origins who saw what his people were doing to another as wrong and switched sides, in a crucial move for the conclusion of the war, but still often faced ostracization and prejudice for what his face represents to his new home. I especially love how his best friend and nemesis are Elara and Faron—talk about conflict! But his budding friendship, and maybe something more, with Faron is the kind of enemies-to-lovers I’m all in for! And speaking of enemies-to-lovers, Elara’s budding romance with Signey is fire (pun intended!)!
While this book was clearly a debut and at times felt confusing in plot, overall I did really enjoy it and the ending twist, so I will definitely be reading the next book to find out what happens! I struggled between 3 and 4 stars for my rating, feeling like a 3 through the middle, but then landing on 4 for the end. I recommend this to any dragon lovers, fantasy lovers, and those interested in anti-colonial fantasy!
