Re-read 2024:
I pumped my rating because on Storygraph I can add the decimal points. I also think I’ve really appreciated it more this time around, without the hype, my expectations, or the anticipation. I savored every word, every poem and spent time with each line. Understanding, underlining. I had new favorite and lines that punched harder this time. Safia Elhillo never fails, and rereading this had cemented her place as my favorite Sudanese poet ❤️
First read:
4.5/5 Just because The January Children ranks first in my heart, but objectively this poetry collection was raw and honest. It was very brave of Safia to present all the topics she masterfully dissected in these poems. It was such a ride!
As a Sudanese in the diaspora myself, and as a bilingual person, the presentation of the Sudanese culture, and how relatble Safia’s experience to mine makes every line hit so close to home it hurts.
Hunting this book down was almost a mission-impossible for my bf after he knew that I wanted it, and the moment I held it in my hands was I overcome with joy, and that thrill lasted throughout the whole journey of reading it!
Elhillo is an automatic Purchase for me, and I cannot wait to see what she brings next to the table, cuz I’ll be here to eat it up!
