The Stand-In by Lily Chu

5.0

I give this 5 stars because the representation of having depression and anxiety disorders is so spot on. That said not everyone experiences anxiety and depression in the same way, but these characters displayed it the same way I do! The knowing you need to do laundry but can’t bring yourself to do it because your head is a jumble of feeling and anxieties. I’ve seen others describe her as weak and whiney and I take exception to those descriptions. Gracie is a complex character whose mental health is in a fragile place and at the beginning of the story she is in a horrible work situation.

Then We see Gracie grow and progress through the story and it just really resonated with me. She learns from the people she encounters, as well as herself. The self awareness she finds is so heartening and I would love to see where Gracie goes from here.

I also really loved cinnamon roll Sam and his relationship with Gracie. All of her feelings, second guessing, and being hard on herself are things I’ve 100% done and experienced. I was really happy to see her get her HEA in the end. This love story felt real and yet like a fairytale all at the same time
