I appreciate what Danielewski was trying to do. The concept, the format, everything about this book is really interesting in theory. In practice it can be a bit of a slog.
The manuscript about the Navidson Record is the most compelling part of the book. It works as a sort of satire of academic writing while also managing to be truly horrific. But it does drag on for too long. Most of the sections dealing with the daily life of Johnny Truant are less compelling. Though as the book nears the conclusion he becomes slightly more interesting and bearable.
Ultimately some of the gimmicks wear thin and picking up this book feels more like work than something you do for enjoyment.
