The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton

*shakes books feverishly*

Wow. I really enjoyed this book.
It is a serious page turner and I'm so glad I finally got around to it.

I'm brand new to Stuart Turton, but will now be reading his other publication. I really liked that this was nothing like anything I have read before. I'm pretty fresh on the mystery/thriller scene, my talent for picking out the suspected killer in these types of stories is weak (a blessing and a curse because the story really did keep me guessing until about 2/3 of the way through when I made a correct connection with one of the passengers.) And I felt really energized as the pieces started coming together in the end.

I also really enjoyed the isolated setting. Especially since it's just a ship on a vast ocean and the ocean is scary and mysterious without a devil being let loose around it. On a ship, you can't escape. You just have to live with whatever demon is haunting you and hope you come out the other side alive.

The allure of Sammy Pipps was a bit overshadowed by Arent. A sort of Sherlock and Watson duo, but one where Watson outshines Sherlock. We are lead to believe that Sammy will solve the problem but he's locked away, his only refuge short walks at midnight with Arent. But, the rough and tough soldier definitely learned a thing or two while working for Pipps because he really does steal the show, even with that surprise ending.

All in all this was a complex and suspenseful read that had me loathe to put it down when real life got in the way.
