The Book of Delights: Essays by Ross Gay

funny hopeful inspiring lighthearted reflective slow-paced

5.0

This book was… (I cannot resist) a delight. It was recommended to me by a professor of writing who was encouraging our class to try on experimental forms, a big Ross Gay fan herself. Before I even opened the cover, I was in love with the concept - tiny essays about things that bring the writer joy. Without yet giving it consideration beyond saving it space in my carry-on, I packed the book to take on a weekend trip to Salt Lake City for an overdue reunion with my college friends. Within pages, I realize Ross Gay was teaching at Lafayette College while I was a student (& English major) there (and what a shame it is that I didn’t get to take his class). In this book, there are many Lafayette references, which delighted me. The fact that I found my way to it during a weekend when I spent time with my Lafayette friends from 20 years ago? Serendipitously delightful. All alma mater coincidences aside, I loved this gem of a book, for its form, for its voice and humor, for its focus on the small pleasures in life and lessons in mindfulness. This is a book to savor slowly and fully, to re-read, to experience the way one might appreciate an artisanal chocolate truffle, tiny, nuanced and exquisite.
