War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

I’m sad that it’s over. I’m feeling so so about the ending. Maven’s death was weird. It was never explicitly said or explained how it happened. It gave it a vague feeling that he might come back. Very strange. I also think it’s weird that Cal is upset at all with Mare about it. He told her to go after him. She almost died at Maven’s hand. I would think the rage of almost losing Mare would override the possibility of resentment towards her for Maven’s death.
I can’t believe I didn’t realize this takes place in way future North America until the end of this book. Because 100% she’s describing Yellowstone in that last scene. And then I read the questions at the end, where she says that Harbor Bay is where Boston “used to be.”
Fascinating. Almost makes me want to read them again. I didn’t read the novellas/broken throne. I haven’t decided yet if I want to.
I love the relationship building in this series and the social justice. The fire Mare has to save everyone.
I also weirdly loved Evangeline in this book. She was the character I was most excited to have narrate by the end. I’m so glad she got her happy ending.
Hmmmm… I just don’t know if I love the ending Mare got. It’s very open-ended, of course. On one hand I’m so glad she didn’t end up having to be in a relationship to be happy. On the other hand, Cal finally stepped into who we knew he could be and changed for the better. It just feels like there’s a little something missing.
