One Night in Garoureve by Elle M. Drew
3.0
Rating even though I had to DNF. My DNFing was a me thing not an author thing.
First we hit on what everybody wants to know with romance:The sex was hot - like 3 chapters of pure meltdown right off the bat hot - but I didn't like quite how much the author commented on the MCs concern over body type. It made sense for the character with her backstory. Her model-esk lover made it clear that he enjoyed her size. I wasn't in a place where it was ok for me to have that in my head.
Positive note for how committed the author and characters were to consent and communication!
The story had great small town vibes, woodsy werewolf territory, and the setup of a good pack structure for as far as I went in. Overall good for anyone hungering for a new were/shifter series.
Could it have used a pass through by an editor for repetitive words and phrasing? Yeah, but I know this was a self-pub, first book, on a limited budget. Structure and plot were strong enough to ignore nit-picky book snobbery. The author shows real promise, has a commitment to body positivity, and will certainly improve as she gets more writing under her belt.
Worth a read. Not my current speed.
