Strip Tees: A Memoir of Millennial Los Angeles by Kate Flannery

adventurous dark emotional funny hopeful sad tense medium-paced

5.0

This book is a wild ride. Kate was a young, idealistic writer who came to L.A. to make her fortune and ended up being seduced into working for American Apparel in 2005. All the weird stuff she was asked to do, and the way the job broke her down emotionally, is harrowing, but the way Kate tells the story almost makes you feel nostalgic for that time and for your own years of being young and easily-exploited. It's Kate's writing that really elevates this from a normal abusive-workplace memoir to a fever dream.
