This is the third book I read by Rooney. I somehow enjoyed the other two, although I see the same character style and writing style in this one and they didn’t work for me this time. However, I thought the premise was brilliant and the last 100 pages saved the book for me. I liked the way she connects human feelings to the beauty of nature and how that somehow is connected to the unending cycle of life. I also enjoyed how she makes the point with the story that what actually impacts our life the most, our happiness and trust in the future, is not world politics or Brexit or even a pandemic, but rather if we have the love of those near and dear to us or not. I know some people will find this simplistic but there is definitely a kernel of truth there. And she makes that beautifully clear.
However I do find the way Rooney writes female characters quite depressing: they are always pick mes ready to betray their most strongly held beliefs for the attention of a man that isn’t even that great- ugh. It’s very literary fiction-y of her, though.
