This was a reread and it was just as great of an experience as the first time. Lyra is such a fun character to follow - very much a child and bratty at times, but also clever, brave and sweet. The other characters are just as strong, especially Mrs. Coulter and Uncle Asriel.

They’re quite frightening villains for a middle grade book, as you’re supposed to be able to trust adults, especially your own parents. I do love that something like this is explored, as it is very much a part of real life. I feel the same way about the plot of separating children from their daemons and how horrifying it is. It’s a very clear metaphor for
conformity and loss of the sense of self, something we all have to struggle with as we grow up and find our place in the world.

I can’t wait to finally continue with the series!
