I think this book is profound and important in understanding the red light district and its historical impact in Japan. There was something so impactful in reading about a 15 year old getting sold to a brothel and her journey towards freedom. Something that struck to me was this:

The law states that prostitutes have lost their human rights and are therefore the same as livestock. Just as no one expects an animal to repay a debt, a prostitute must not be asked to repay what she owes, either.

I think the way prostitution and the female gender is viewed is interesting but also incredibly sad. I enjoyed following the different POVs though it was initially very confusing to follow the different characters. Some of the deeper nuances, I couldn't fully grasp and the ending seemed a little strange to me but that aside, I definitely can't take away from the fact that the book was really good. I have a feeling this book will stay with me for quite a long time.
