A masterful, comprehensive biography of Oscar Wilde; in my opinion, even a little bit better than the Ellmann biography. Sturgis is a shade more critical of Wilde than I remember Ellmann being, and in particular is more sympathetic to Constance Wilde. (Constance has often been portrayed as cold and unforgiving when she was in fact caught in an impossible situation and trying to reconcile with her husband even after he left prison, only abandoning the effort when he continued to be seen with Bosie Douglas.) Sturgis has had access to papers that Ellmann did not, and he draws a multifaceted picture of Wilde, who was charming and fun but also reckless and self-absorbed. Highly recommended and should be seen as the definitive life of Wilde.
