Ajin: Demi-Human, Vol. 1 by Gamon Sakurai

5.0

I liked this manga a lot, so I’m committed to reading and reviewing the remaining 16 volumes. It’s action-packed, brutal, and beautifully illustrated with a great (yet sort of unoriginal) storyline.

Ajin: Demi-Human, Vol. 1 introduces the reader to a high school kid named Kei Nagai who is struck and killed after being hit by a truck. But Kei doesn’t stay dead for long, because he immediately revives back into his human form. Right then, he learns that he’s no regular human, but rather a demi-human. These demi-humans are a rarity, with only forty-seven of them (now forty-eight) being known to man, with only two (now three) being discovered in Japan. There is not much known about them aside from them being almost immortal beings that may be aided with supernatural abilities. Their existence is discussed in labs and and at school… and they are coveted “creatures” by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Fame and rewards are a guarantee with the capture of a demi-human, so you must imagine the fear Kei felt for his existence after his town witnesses his transformation. Learning of his immortality in a public place puts Nagai in a world of danger.

And this is where Ajin: Demi-Human quickly ascends into its action-packed storyline. Accompanying Kei’s escape from town is his childhood friend, Kai, an outcast with a tough streak who stands by no matter what. The manhunt has begun quickly and there’s so much more to explore. I’m excited to continue this story.

You’d think immortality would make someone pretty happy. But when humanity wants to rip you apart or kill you over and over again in the name of research, living forever might not be so appealing. Being constantly on the run isn’t “the life.” I think there will be a few philosophical elements tucked away into this series, we’ll see. Plus, demi-humans are of interest to me and I’m curious to see how the storyline will progress.

And did I mention just how fire the artwork is? Gamon Sakurai has such an appealing art style.

Already grabbed Vol. 2, which I’m ready to read. The manhunt for Kei is on, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me.
