The Tea Dragon Festival by K. O'Neill

5.0

Katie O'Neill's comics to a lot of things that I wish were more common in the modern world of comic books. Her art is approachable, colorful, and a pleasure to look at one every page. Her writing is direct and serves the story rather than seeming like a performance. And the overall story is very sweet and has a compassionate vibe to it throughout.

This series has one of my favorite sort of atmospheres, and I acknowledge that its an oddly specific line to walk. There's no real villains, and the conflicts are typically internal and usually not life or death. People are trying to find themselves and learn about each other. The trick is to do it without being boring, and I think the beautiful art goes a long way to help with that. It's like watching a Miyazaki movie, and not everyone can handle that balance.

This is my third graphic novel by O'Neill, and I've yet to be disappointed by her work. In looking up this book review I discovered that there's apparently a third book in this series, and I'm already excited.
