The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
4.0
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I thought the scope and pacing were just perfect. I've been getting annoyed with a lot of mystery/thriller novels (not that this is necessarily that genre, but I digress) trying to cram in a bunch of last minute twists just for the sake of being unpredictable, when really all I want is a well told story. It's OK if the story is more straightforward sometimes, so long as it's told well.
This is what I got out of The Hacienda - the storytelling felt natural and, after the first few chapters of setup, it was easy for me to fall into it headfirst. I'm also a sucker for anything witchcraft/occult, so there's that.
Sidenote: I couldn't help but picture Andrés as Father Pruitt from Mike Flanagan's 'Midnight Mass' (which I highly recommend watching). I know Father Pruitt isn't Hispanic, but the demeanor of both characters plus their uh... spiritual off-roading, seemed very reminiscent of one another.
