The Familiar has the makings of a fairytale yet it’s so anchored in merciless reality it cannot be anything but the truth. It’s Snow White being a servant to Seven Dwarves instead of a friend, it’s Cinderella’s stepsister cutting off her toes to fit the slipper. In my heart it’s five stars (if not for the pacing hiccups).
