Heartless by Marissa Meyer

3.0

I really like the fairytale retelling from Marissa Meyer in her Lunar Chronicles, but this one was a dissapointment for me. It started out fine. Most of the story is about Catherine, just having a normal life. I liked how it took place in Wonderland and Jest and the Mad Hatter were there. I really liked how Catherine loved to bake. The food discriptions were so good! I almost had the feeling I was eating the food myself. But this part of the story could also just have taken place in the normal world. It has some of the weird elements that we know from Alice in Wonderland, but they felt secondary and wouldn't really be missed if they weren't there. I kept wondering how Catherine was going to become the Queen of Hearts though, because she is extremely nice and there was only 10-20% of the book left.

So then this 'thing' happens and I was like; okay, that's a start, but what's next? But that was it. It's not really a little thing, but it's also not a thing that should turn a person that is mentally stable, pretty normal and SO nice into the Queen of Hearts. I get how events can have a certain effect on people, but this was wayyyy to extreme lol. Such a lame villain backstory. The Queen of Hearts better has a more interesting reason for being such a raging bitch because this one is pretty shit.
