You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle
5.0
“the truth is plain, unfolding before us, but as usual i am late to catch on because i’ve been holding it all in and trying to rationalize away my gut instincts.”
and the truth is that they were made for each other all along. they do deserve each other.
i cannot thank aina enough as well as nana for FINALLY making me pick you deserve each other up after MONTHS of it left rotting in my tbr list and i’m so glad that they invited me for this readalong because you deserve each other is everything i love and hoped for in a romantic comedy!
naomi and nicholas has been absolutely perfect for each other since day one. dare i say match made in heaven really because both of their characteristics even each other out so well. but i love how it took them releasing it all and admitting the things that they have kept from each other that have bothered each of them for years to be the one that brings them closer despite the chaos that may have ensued in between it all and i think that’s so realistic of relationships as i know it.
i’m pretty open about my relationship journey with most people and i’m comfortable talking about the ups and downs my boyfriend and i have gone through together over the past 6 years. we’ve known each other ever since high school, and there was always a part of me that had known that if we were to last longer that what high school relationships—puppy love or whatever it is they call it—often last, we’re gonna be heading towards a rocky direction when it comes to us both growing up and changing because we aren’t the 14-year-olds we were once before. and we did.
it was really tough on us. but like naomi and nicholas, we started being more open and transparent when it comes to trying to understand each other better because he’s not a mind reader and he can’t read my mind when i’m displeased by something and it goes the same way around. communication really is the key. whether it’s in the form of a banter or a rational discussion, communicating with your partner (especially before making any big jumps as naomi and nicholas did!) is so important to ensure both sides are getting what they each needed from one another instead of it feeling one-sided.
i love how the author spiced up their relationship with the banters between naomi and nicholas, occasional sabotages and just naomi’s whole thoughts in general. they’re just so heartwarming and entertaining to read and the way that the author eased into the lovers-enemies-lovers again thing was just so smooth and brilliant that it doesn’t feel so sudden at all. her writing was so easy to digest as well and despite the complicated drama with the in-laws (what’s a wedding without a drama, am i right? especially with the in-laws!) everything still turned out so smoothly and good and i just love a rom-com done right! this book somewhat got me interested in searching for a toothless tie for my own man... might just go on a deep dive on the internet tonight
