“…You think you are about to possess what men have hopelessly yearned for throughout the ages: the soul of an innocent, trusting, dependent child inside the opulent body of a radiantly lovely woman.”
I watched the movie thinking “this feels like the male fantasy version of female sexual liberation” and then I picked up the book to find out that… that was the bloody point 😭!!! Why did the movie leave out that twist at the end? The ambiguous nature of the ending is way more up Yorgos’ alley than that wholly positive, near-fantastical ending.
This book was great and so much more complex than the movie leads you to think it will be. I love love LOVE an unreliable narrator and this book did it in a way that genuinely surprised me. The only reason this isn’t getting five stars is because there were parts of the book that felt a little unnecessary, massive chunks of exposition that slowed down the text and made it a little jarring to get through, but I’m so satisfied by the ending that I physically can’t give this less than a 4.
