This is an excellent slow-burn horror for horror beginners like me. There are spooky paranormal elements, but the horrors really lie in the history of the Duchon family’s experience with racism, colorism, and generational trauma. I love Jemma. She wants to be loved and accepted and in seeking that love, she makes some questionable decisions, but her character development throughout the story is gratifying. The twists are shocking and I was uneasy for the majority of the book. If you enjoy historical fiction and southern gothic horror, pick up Sandeen’s debut novel! I will definitely keep an eye out for her next book!
