I picked Persuasion up for a reread along with MMD book club friends for Austen in August. I was just a few chapters in when I watched the film version (2007). Both were delightful, although the book more so. Austen writes people beautifully. I love this story, and find it even better on a reread (after a watch). The romance, conversations, honor, and hilarity of the side characters make this a great way to spend summer afternoons. Highly recommend!

I am late to the party and only recently starting to experience Jane Austen novels. Last year I read and loved Pride and Prejudice. Persuasion is my second (Emma is up next). Better late than never certainly applies here. Persuasion is a beautiful story of Anne Elliot and her journey from being unheard and persuaded by others in an important decision to eight plus years later using her voice and following her heart. The object of her love has his own journey of maturation. Although we know how it ends, the experience of the unfolding is beautiful.
Austen gives us an interesting cast of fully developed characters to love and laugh with. I haven’t seen any movies and almost hesitate to watch one as I have a vivid picture in my mind of every character. The writing is beautiful. I read with a pen in my hand as I wanted to talk back to Austen, celebrating her work, even as I was fully invested in the lives of the Elliots and their friends.
I get it now. The love and honor people show Austen is well placed. I will read Persuasion again and again for the experience. Knowing the plot will not change my enjoyment. I love Austen’s (and Anne Elliot’s) observations about people, her prose, her ability to deliver a story that resonates with every generation. This classic is a delightful read for anyone wanted a literary and fun reading experience.
