Women of Futures Past: Classic Stories by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
4.0
Women of Futures Past is a great introduction to many women pioneers in the field of science-fiction writing. Editor Kristine Kathryn Rusch introduces each story with a bit of background on the writer, their legacy, and her personal connection to their work. The stories themselves span the breadth of the genre, from stories of lost worlds to time travel to alternate histories, space opera and hard sci-fi. While the collection is helpful in introducing readers to white women SF writers, there are no stories included by women of color - not even Octavia Butler. This is an unfortunate omission that mirrors the way women of all races were excluded from or marginalized in many collections of "canon" SF.
I'm interested if others have recommendations for more inclusive collections of SF short stories. One that I particularly recommend is [b:Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements|23129839|Octavia's Brood Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements|Adrienne Maree Brown|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1425611661l/23129839._SX50_.jpg|42677666].
