Okay, so this is a Commander Shepard / Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect) fanfiction that got published that isn't even trying to hide it's origin. For the most part, I fully respect this, because I love this pairing a lot and have read a lot of fanfiction of them over the past decade. But hoooo boy, the editor did not do a good job adapting this story for a crowd that does not have prior knowledge of the setting, politics or characters. The name changes are clunky at best (Garrus Vakarian → Vakar, Omega Station → Omicron Station, Spectres → Wraiths, and so on) and while I did appreciate the catchphrases of some of the characters reappearing, it did throw me out of the story a bit at times. I wasn't able to listen to the second half without constantly trying to place the characters and their counterparts.
I think this story was fine. It was an alright space opera, which the blurb pitched to be way more lighthearted and funny than it actually was, and it was an okay mass effect fanfiction. It talked too much about cloacas and farts, for my tastes, but maybe that's just me. I don't think that I'll be moving on to the sequels as I had originally planned; I think I am just a bit too biased now for me to properly enjoy it and review fairly.
