This was phenomenally written! As a death worker myself, I had low expectations going in. Our work is so often sensationalized, or written about by folks who’ve seen or done a small amount in the field, and write surface level content about death care like they are the ultimate experts on everything. Campbell does the opposite- it seems she goes into each interview underscoring any personal knowledge, and instead allows every death care worker she interviews to be the expert in their own field, tying the different stories together beautifully, with personal reflexions and emotions woven throughout. This is a beautifully executed narrative on mortality, the way the world views death, (or rather, doesn’t view death) and the quiet professionals behind the scenes taking care of all aspects of death.
