The Romantics by Leah Konen

2.5

2.5 stars

this book wasn’t bad at all, i just think i didn’t get the most out of it because i am not the target audience. if i had read this when i was a few years younger, i probably would have enjoyed it a lot more.

i found the story to be bland, VERY Y/A as expected, and the characters very meh - there wasn’t anything much to them

gael - hopeless romantic with anger issues and cannot cope with his parents divorce - felt like he was 16
sammy - brunswick girl vibes, likes movies and french
piper - typical child
cara - very basic girl vibes
mason and anika and friends - all very meh

i’ll probably end up forgetting about this book, but it was good as a palette cleanser during assignment season

i liked the concept of love being the narrator and would like to see it play out in an adult romance instead

TO SUMMARISE THE PLOT SO I REMEMBER:

- anika cheats on gale with mason, his best friend
- big friendship group falls apart
- gale super cranky since his parents divorced a year ago, assumes his dad cheated on mum but was wrong
- meets cara coz she smashes into him on her bike and they eat nachos and kiss but their relo is super bland and they had nothing in common
- sammy is piper (gales lil sis) babysitter and they become good friends (supposedly) and she’s the one he’s meant to be with
- big movie-scene chase of trying to find her in her dorm then the airport
- they both get handcuffed (she gets taken off the plane, he gets caught sneaking into the airport), they see each other and kiss and happily ever after
