Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

5.0

I haven't read this story since high school, but I'm going to see the play on Broadway this upcoming Thursday so I wanted to refresh myself.

Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. While this is no East of Eden, he can sure take you on an emotional roller coaster in a mere 100+ pages. I'm a sucker for detail and a painted picture when it comes to scenery and character descriptions and Steinbeck always delivers. By putting so much emphasis on landscape, or clothing, or character disposition, I'm able to connect with them quickly and have an idea of the beauty of rural America as well. There's a sense of peace that comes from reading words like his, although this story is anything but peaceful.

Re-connecting with George and Lennie now that I haven't read this book since roughly 1999 makes me appreciate it on another level entirely. They're more brutal and heart-breaking to experience from an adult perspective so I really enjoyed getting reacquainted, even if only for a short while.
