This is my favorite book in the Forward Collection series. This book highlights the beauty in disaster. Even when the world is ending, the characters take the time to "smell the roses," so to speak, which has caused a lot of readers to find this book implausible. I think quite the opposite. If we knew, years in advance, that the world would be destroyed, that initial chaos to scramble and pull a solution together would eventually fizzle out. It is very possible that time as we perceive it would slow down as people came to terms with the fact that not only is the world ending, but their lives would be lived in full on an escape ship, leaving their children and grandchildren to establish the new world. This (believe it or not) is the first thing I have read from this author, though Divergent is sitting on my bookshelf, and I am incredibly impressed by what she demonstrated in this short story.
