“Member now, even in the big house you’s still Pheby Delores Brown, who was the gran-daudder of a Madrina queen. You a slave in name, but never in your mind, Chile.”

Imagine being born into slavery, and not knowing that your privilege while living on your father’s plantation isn’t held in any regard elsewhere.

Mulattos had a slight advantage, but a slave was always a slave, and a master was what they were - Marse to many.

Pheby was taught well, educated and her mother instilled in her that she was no one’s property. She was strong and that took her further than most.

She did what she must for her children, the best she knew how - in her position. Her beloved Essex, and a few others finally saw the me freedom they deserved.

Shortly after, all were freed. The Devils Half Acre was eventually turned into a University.

Took a while, but Ruth was right - freedom was Pheby’s!

Great read and I’m happy to know that this story is based on a true story.
