Satan's Affair by H.D. Carlton
1.0
Type of read: Commuter Read.
What made me pick it up: I was going to start the Cat & Mouse Duology (Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline, respectively) but the Goodreads for Haunting Adeline said it was highly suggested to read the 'Satan's Affair' novela first...and being the series whore I am, I had to.
Overall rating: I won't lie, I struggled with 'Satan's Affair.' I don't know if it's because I really never planned on reading it and only did because it was suggested as the prequel novella to the Cat & Mouse Duology but dang, I'm hoping this is a 'make it make sense' type of read. 'Satan's Affair' is very spice-heavy on the front end and nearly nonexistent after about chapter 7 or so, except for mentions of what they'd like to participate in/do but didn't due to setting and other characters. I did like that we got to meet Zade and get a little info on them before diving into the rest of the series; however, I'm still at the 'make it make sense' point. As of right now, I'd say don't bother with 'Satan's Affair' due to the poor writing, lack of a detailed edit, and general chaoticness. Fingers crossed the Cat & Mouse Duology is better. If not, this series might be a DNF.
Some thoughts while reading:
-Why are there so many extra words? EDITOR!
-Is Sybil supernatural? Or is her 'smells' just something she has created as part of her childhood trauma?
-Demons...you mean scum of the earth people that don't really have supernatural powers. I'm still so confused by the world this book takes place in.
-"...we leave for Seattle...Washington..." Where else would Seattle be? Again with so many words. EDITOR!
-"Hot breath fans across my sensitive flesh, causing goosebumps to rise on my flesh." Or how about 'hot breath fans across my sensitive flesh, causing goosebumps to rise.' EDITOR!
-No one eats an ice cream cone languidly on a hot summer day. Get your descriptors and scenes matching.
-Ok, now I get that demon isn't really demon, it's what her psychotic dad used to call those who didn't follow the same religion and teachings as them...still, why did this take me eight chapters to figure out?!?
-Welp, that created a mental picture I'm not sure I was ready for.
Reader's Note: 'Satan's Affair' includes themes of sex, sex with multiple partners, death, murder, weapons including weapons used during sexual acts, eating disorders, abuse, and rape. Here's my general PSA to read and know what trigger warnings you feel comfortable with and exploring through literature.
