The Last Dance by J. Mackenzie
4.0
The Last Dance is set in the world of professional ballet and, as a former dancer, it made my heart happy to go back to my happy place - rehearsal rooms and performance stages. This is the story of Achilles and Patroclus…ex-boyfriends with a complicated past and lots of heartbreak.
Achilles is a professional ballet dancer who has performed all around the world and has spent his time away from NYC trying to become a better person, someone more grounded and less invested in what others have to say about him or his dance skills. He’s back in NYC to perform in Romeo and Juliet - his last role before retiring from dance and figuring out what comes next for him. Patroclus is the stage manager at the theater where Achilles is performing and is amazing at his job - detail oriented and always observing things to anticipate what everyone will need. He really found himself when he moved to NYC and has cultivated a life full of friends and work that he had always dreamed about.
I definitely expected a bit more drama between these two and more groveling on Achilles’ part to get Patroclus back, but this was relatively drama-free and things resolved between the two of them quickly. The two of them together were really sweet and fit into each other’s lives well, despite their past troubles. I’m glad Achilles turned things around while he was gone, otherwise reuniting with Patroclus definitely could have gone horribly. I would have loved to see more of them interacting at work, more of the thoughtful gestures from Patroclus and Achilles trying to figure out a way to be there for Patroclus while he worked his butt off. But loved that they finally got their HEA after everything they went through and all their years apart!
