Love the idea of this book, but did not like the execution. I kind of rolled my eyes at at some of the descriptions used and language. My biggest issue was the butch lesbian character felt like she was written like a man and it felt so off. It distracted me the entire read, but maybe the intention was Andy questioning her gender identity? It just wasn’t clear enough if that were the case
and sometimes felt like that possible questioning was only for later plot issues. </spoilers> The book also spent so much time building up in the beginning I nearly lost interest. Somethings felt convenient instead of surprising. I really did love the premise and the tension was great at times.
I absolutely loved any scene in the mines. The wheezers description was so cool and creepy. I loved that they eventually adapted to their environment too. I do wish Peter’s actual body was used more for the mystery aspect than the manifestation in Nate’s mind. I felt like that wasn’t utilized in a way I enjoyed. </spoilers> This is all just personal preference and I can see why people enjoy this so much. I would never deter people from reading it and if anyone is looking for a fun mystery/thriller with hints of Scooby-Doo then I would highly encourage them to try it out. It just happened that I didn’t mesh with this one.
