Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada
5.0
I've been urged multiple times over the years to read Alone in Berlin. It's basically every subject that I'm interested in and love in literature, so why wouldn't I love it? Finally, I picked it up and everyone's opinions were confirmed. A tense read that left my emotions and nerves ragged, Fallada's most famous work is truly excellent. With a cast of characters this size, some authors would struggle to keep the reader absolutely absorbed, yet Fallada seemingly managed this with ease as even the most vile, ugly, deplorable characters were fascinating to read about, and I found myself caring for practically every single one of them (which was a bit unsettling). This translation as well was very good, although some of the word choices took me out of Berlin for a little bit and shortly transported me to America/England. It was a little disjointing and, I admit, did throw me off sometimes. However, Alone in Berlin is a modern classic that will be enjoyed for so many years to come.
