Country Life in Scotland: Our Rural Past by Alexander Fenton
informative
fast-paced
3.5
This is a lot more in the line of pop history, and doesn't go into a hell of a lot of detail on some topics, but did give a reasonable look at rural life in Scotland from about 1700 through to WWI. I initially felt like I wasn't getting enough depth on any given topic, and spent too much page time on the 19th and 20th centuries, but the final half dozen chapters about food were very informative, and gave a good idea of the pace of daily life. There is also quite a bit about the Highlands and Islands, which is a nice change from just throwing up one's hands at the lack of documentation. There were also a good quantity of pictures, but the quality of the scan I was reading rendered them less useful than they could be, and many of them were 20th century anyway.
