Pink Mountain on Locust Island by Jamie Marina Lau
4.0
What a beautiful little gem of a novel! I’ve never read anything like it, in tone or structure. I feel like it is the literary equivalent of following an artist on Instagram, you can happily dip in and out as each chapter might only be a sentence, a paragraph or a couple of pages, depending on what little vignette in Monk’s life we are shining a light on. The prose is the closest thing to poetry that I’ve actually enjoyed, it’s vivid, metaphorical, visceral and really gives you a good insight into Monk’s character. I’m still digesting the ending, I think I might have read it too fast since I’ve taken my time with the rest of it. A very worthy entry in the Stella Prize shortlist!
