The Pit of Darkness by Martin Charbonneau

3.0

Really captures the feel of the gameplay of the early Lone Wolf books, although it seems much easier. Not just fewer instadeath options, also combat is less difficult than books one and two, meaning that there's less incentive to avoid it. You still won't want to get into every possible fight, but you probably will want to get into a few.

The story is more like some of the later Lone Wolf books than the early ones, except that Autumn Snow is much less capable than Lone Wolf. That's a good thing though, because game balance in the main series is completely destroyed by book two.

My one major criticism though is the completely unnecessary threat of sexual assault by one of the book's villains. It really seems like one of those cases where an author has this idea that if the protagonist is female then rape has to at least be threatened or implied. Despite being captured by enemies on many occasions, neither Lone Wolf nor the male protagonist of the New Order series were ever threatened with rape, but as soon as there's a female protagonist there it is.

It's especially inappropriate given that this is, essentially, a children's book. It's not explicit, and some might argue that the primary audience for this series is adults nostalgic for the Lone Wolf books they read as children, but it's still completely out of place and unnecessary. That aside, the book is very good and would have gotten four stars from me, but that one section drags it down to three.
