I like that this author was going for something different. The setting is really interesting (West Virginia mining town in the early 1920s.) And the conflict wasn't just keeping their relationship from the other miners/townspeople, but that Floyd feels disloyal to his first love, Matt, who died years ago. While I didn't love every single authorial choice, I was intrigued enough to keep going and am glad I did.
(And I liked her second book even more!)
