The Other by Thomas Tryon

4.0

"The Other" is a creepy-creepy book about an evil twin (complete with their gentle, weak-willed, easily-to-back-down brother) that can give its readers the heebie-jeebies. The twist(s), read in today's state of content overexposure, are no longer shocking or mind-blowingly so, but mind you, this book was first published in the early 70s. This was definitely the OG.

The prose was rather poetic, and atmospheric, and had Gothic feeling to it. Although sometimes the narration feels longwinded because it tries to stay pretty in portraying gruesome scenes, or wanting to scatter clue without giving away too much, at the end of the day, the general imagery of the story is successfully conveyed. (The Afterword undoubtedly helps clear away my confusion about some things. My advice if you have the same edition as me? Read the Afterword)

I like this. Not as much as I love Shirley Jackson's "[b:We Have Always Lived in the Castle|89724|We Have Always Lived in the Castle|Shirley Jackson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1704229774l/89724._SX50_.jpg|847007]" (which is brilliantly, perfectly, creepy), but this one is quite close.
