A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
5.0
This was magnificent!
The writing is wonderful, the story completely fascinating, the characters so realistic and it all feels like nonfiction even if it is full on fantasy.
I loved lady trend and everything she has to go through to get where she ended up at the end of the book and how she got to that part.
I love Jacob! He was such a wonderfully written make character that is such a wonderful support and at the same time in no means a push over.
I love the love of books in this book.
It's wonderful how much dragons are "just" animals in this book, they exist and some people want to understand them and learn about them, but mostly? People just accept that they are in their lives, exist and not necessarily more interested then most people are interested to learn more about the everyday birds for example, so they are not more understanding why lady trend finds them so interesting as people around us today understand why some people find specific animals infesting or fascinating.
Brennan just ... She a great writer, she is honest and realistic and manges to write complete canasta you in such a realistic way that it no longer seems fantasy but as if we can leave our own houses and find a sparkling laying in the garden, just waiting to be preserved with vinegar.
Maybe I just connected to this book so wonderfully because I kind of was lady trend as a child, in the way that I wanted to understand and learn what the world has to offer, I wanted to understand the bodies even if I never went as far as actually cut a dead animal open since I just loved -love since I still do love animals!- animals to much to get over that to actually cut into them but I had books with enough detailed illustrations to not feel the real need to do that as lady trend had to to get a real understanding of the organs and bone structure and his and why bird for example are build so differently then humans.
So maybe it was the deep understand from my side of the curiosity and intended need to know that connected me with the main character so much that I just couldn't not love this book.
But I honestly think that I would have loved this book anyways simple because of the fanstic writer and storyteller Brennan is.
If you haven't read this book yet, what are you waiting for?
Go do it,mexpefience a world where dragons are typical creatures, where even in a more Victorian area, a woman can find her way and do what she has a deep inspiration in herself to do.
Be enchanted by this book! Go on! Read! Now, please!
