Burner by Robert Ford

dark emotional mysterious reflective medium-paced

5.0

Horror is most terrifying when it feels real and Burner is one of the best examples of horror fiction I’ve read this year. The brutal subject matter made me want to walk away several times, but Ford’s writing was UNPUTDOWNABLE. Literally; I read it in one sitting.

Alternating between two narrators and timelines kept me on an emotional roller coaster and constantly guessing what was coming next. It was surprisingly easy to connect with both main characters, despite their very different situations and choices.

This one hit me hard-as a woman, as a daughter, and as a mother. I went in blind and won’t say more for others that may want the same experience. Other reviews have included appropriate trigger warnings, so please take a look or message me if you’d like more detail on those.
