The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

3.0

This was my first 'Greek Mythology' book and I frankly speaking, liked it. Even though I never read a book like this, I still had a fair idea of how Greek Gods were. The story itself was great but not remotely new which I didn't expect it to be. I loved the classic moral teaching of pride and anger and how it drives a man (or a god) to do great and terrible things. The representation of Mother's love in Thetis is so on point. I loved how she was able to redeem all her wrongs at the very end and learned her lessons.

So, if the story is well known and predictable, what does one seek in a book of this sort? Writing! It wasn't bad obviously, Madeline Miller did a great job but I was expecting more. I don't think I read a single Greek word in the entire book or a moment where we felt closer to the 'Greek Goddishness' of a character. They felt oddly humanish. Idk if that's intentional but I don't think that would be the case. It also lacked emphasis on the places they visited

and general description of environments. I just felt I wasn't there but that could be just me.

All in all a good book and a story with few shortcomings
