First, the narrator is 🤌🏼 and the overall production of this book in audio is top tier.
Second, I think having read the previous trilogy by Abercrombie allowed me to enjoy this book much more than if this were a first experience with his style of storytelling.
Third, I had no idea this was a continuation of the First Law story until about 1/3 into the book, and then realized there is a book in between these two trilogies 🤷🏻‍♀️ oh well.
If you’re not familiar with Abercrombie’s work, here is a crash course: His trilogies play out something like this; book 1 is the ultimate setup, so not a ton of action per se or the sense of a plot. You’re given a thorough deep dive into all of the characters involved and their respective drama. Now, book 2 is where we are introduced to some semblance of a plot and things get wild. Book 3 is all about the wild climax and some twisted view of a HEA.
So, as far as Abercrombie book 1s go this is a masterpiece. All of the characters are quite funny in their own quirky way and I found myself totally invested in their drama pretty early on. I believe my favorites are Rikke and Orso, because they really don’t give a damn what anyone thinks. There are 9 or 10 main POVs but I didn’t find it overwhelming, Abercrombie does a great job of transitioning between them and each perspective moves the story along.
I encourage anyone who enjoys a beefy grimdark to give this book a go, and try not to take things too seriously :)
