The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

5.0

okay, i absolutely adored this book so so so much.

the sword of summer is about a boy named magnus chase who has been living homeless for two years since the mysterious death of his mother, which was apparently caused by wolves. this death is connected with magnus's father's side of the family, and his father, as we know, is a norse god. this is about magnus discovering his roots and he meets tons of eccentric characters along the way. this book has riordan's trademark humor and epic battles, but it delivers so much more emotionally.

okay, can we talk about magnus? because i'm kind of in love with him. i was half-expecting him to be a percy jackson knockoff, but he wasn't. he was so much more. he was so vulnerable and open to expressing his emotions, which i found very very satisfying. he was brave and heroic and selfless, but he didn't close himself up like most heroes. he was extremely open to letting others see his emotional side, and that just made me fall in love with him.

secondly, can we talk about how much diversity we have in this book? we have a deaf character who's the biggest sweetheart in the world, a black character who's brave and hilarious and amazing with fashion, and a lead girl who's a muslim and is so kickass and brave and just an amazing fighter.

plot-wise, this book did not disappoint. with twists and turns at every moment and unreliable characters at every corner, this book will definitely keep the reader hooked and laughing hysterically. (also--that ending, though? omggggggg)

i can't wait for the next book to come out!! the ending just made everything a whole new level of complicated, and i just really hope magnus meets the greek demigods. i needdddd ittttttt

i highly recommend this book! this won't only have you laughing till the end, but it will tug on your heartstrings as well--just an overall incredible experience.
