How Does It Feel? by Jeneane O'Riley
4.0
I decided to read this book after the intense amount of hype it got, alongside someone mentioned that the villain reminded them of one of my own (Raum from ATB). First off, Mendax and Raum are nothing alike. Raum is truly evil to his chore, wile Mendax does have a soft spot for our MC and finds himself (rather quickly) falling in love with her even though he knows nothing about her. He feels this pull and assumes it's love? I'm still not entirely certain this isn't going to turn into a fated mates situation.
The more I read of Mendax though, he started to give me Franklin from True Blood vibes. (The psycho vamp that kidnapped Tara and thought he was in love with her). IF Mendax turns out to be like this (and not actually in love with our MC) then that would be fantastic. I think that would make the story far more interesting. Because him fantasizing over how soft her skin was and silky her hair (and then eating her out because of it), and then suddenly is in love with her, was too much for me. It felt jolted, out of place.
I suspected our MC was from the Seelie Court. I initially thought she was a changeling. So that bit was off, but as soon as it was mentioned the foxes were from the Seelie Court, who she belonged too was fairly obvious. The twist was interesting and I'm curious to see how the story will evolve later on.
I enjoyed the science and technical side of the story more than anything else. That was hands down the best part of the entire story. As I mentioned during my read, it reminded me of my experience with Into the Drowning Deep and I loved it! I wish more books would blend the sci-fi/fantasy line in the way that O'Riley managed.
Overall, I give the story 4 stars and will be continuing to the next book.
