“I understand now that loneliness is worse if there are people about than if there are not.”
A thought-provoking novel in epistolary form - two characters writing back and forth, sharing glimpses of their lives, opening and challenging their minds whilst getting to know each other.
They never meet, yet it feels as if, at some obscure moment in time, they’d spent all the time in the world together.
I enjoy conversations that include details and the small, mundane elements of one’s life. I find fascinating discovering what is of value to someone. This novel paints a thorough picture of these two characters’ daily lives, their families, their personalities, interests, and worries.
“When I read the words you write back, they sound like you, singing in a tune I have become familiar with and which is therefore comforting”
It’s certainly a book you have to commit to finishing. Not due to its length, but mainly due to the uneventful nature of certain chapters. Some parts may feel slightly tedious to get through. The end has me unsure yet. But as an overall novel, it has its beautiful sections too. A mixed reading experience but I surely don’t regret picking this up!
