Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld

This book was cute and is a total beach read. It was more realistic than a lot of the other celebrity meets not famous girl and falls in love novels. This book delved more into the anxiety for someone being with a celebrity, but also the celebrities anxiety of being with someone who wasn’t famous. Romantic Comedy was unique in the the plot. While I have read other celebrity and non-celebrity romances, I don’t think I’ve ever read another book with the premise of an SNL type writer’s job. The characters were pretty well developed and the SNL gig believable.

I really liked Sally and Noah together. I know that the idea of celebrity marrying a non-celebrity is considered some of the most far-fetched of romances and can give a feeling of “here we go again…” Noah didn’t really give off those celebrity vibes, which made it more realistic to see Sally and Noah together.

I never read reviews before I read a book because I want to come up with my own conclusion. I have seen this book all over the Internet and on booktok on Tiktok. One of the biggest complaints about this book is that the main character describes herself as this ugly 40ish year old woman. I never found that to be true reading this novel. Whenever she would call herself anything, it was in reference to celebrities, and comparing herself to the likes of women that Noah typically dated. I did find her to be a little bit hard on herself, but I I can imagine that if I were dating a celebrity, I would have the same thoughts. I would say it was more realistic because i could put myself in her shoes easier.

The way that this book was set up made sense. Early on in the book, I was wondering if it was going to touch on the COVID situation and how they would do it because I have yet to read a novel with COVID in it as a large part of the plot. This was one of the most well-balanced books that I have read in terms of romance, humor, serious stuff, and all the other things.

I also enjoyed the acknowledgments section of the book. I had no idea if this author had had and SNL type job, but that was answered in the acknowledgment section. This author did a lot of reading and research before writing this book and I appreciate that!!! Some novels can feel like they just started writing and it can feel off. That is not the case with this one. Would read again and essential in any beach bag!
