They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South by Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers

challenging emotional informative slow-paced

4.0

An illuminating and thoroughly researched work on the role of white women in American slavery. This book was a difficult but important read that explored many brutalities of slavery that I had not previously read about: white women’s role in and reliance on the slave economy, the realities of wet nursing, the reactions of female enslavers to emancipation, and much much more. It’s definitely a book to take your time with, for many reasons.
