Honestly, Caleb Roehrig never disappoints, and this book was not going to be the one to break that cycle. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the magic. August was very relatable and I think I'd have liked if he had been valued a little more, and not just in the "you're the chosen one" kinda way.
The crisp take on vampires here was refreshing and I loved how magic and vampirism was blended so well.
I just feel like the book was missing a spark. Like a small 'zhuzh' that would have taken it to a great extent. the plot, while promising, was loosely written and it was very dry mud-like, through which if you raked your fingers, you would be disappointed to have it slip through your fingers. The ending I found a little unsatisfactory and felt like it could have been so much better, especially since the book does not have any sequels or prequels or companions.
My overall opinion of the book is high, considering that the concept was really well thought of, but the problem with that is this concept should have been broadly elaborated- a little more worldbuilding if you will. I usually do not enjoy books that last over 500 pages, but I think in this case, the book needed it.
